What is PHP 7?
PHP 7 is the latest version of PHP. It has a few new features but most importantly, it is much faster! Our own testing reveiled that changing from PHP 5.5 to PHP 7.0 resulted in a 40% faster loading WordPres.
Does my website support PHP 7?
If you are running WordPress then your website will work as expected, WordPress has supported PHP 7.0 since November 2015.
What happens if my website does not support PHP 7?
If your website does not support you will see errors. Do not worry, legacy PHP 5.6 support is still available on all servers. If we detected an issue with your website then we have already selected the PHP legacy mode for you. If you run into issues simply log into your DirectAdmin account, go to domain setup and change select the older PHP 5.6 and press save.
What about PHP 5.5?
PHP 5.5 development ended the 10th of June 2015. After 10 Juli 2016, in 5 weeks, it will receive its last security update. We will be updating our PHP 5.5 to PHP 5.6 before that happens.
Are there any other changes?
There are no changes in software support. However, because we are now running two seperate PHP versions on the same server it is possible to some WordPress plugins fail to properly identify the modules that are supported by our apache installed. Plugins such as W3Totalcaching can show a lack of support for mod_deflate. In reality we still support is actually there and everything will work as expected, just like before.
